THOSE SONGS:

Our Mixtapes, Ourselves

“Whit” wrote in to share this tidbit:

I was a member of the CBS Record club because of course. And I remember that I ordered an LP — no cassette available, item on sale — and when it came, the postal carrier folded it to get it in the mailbox. FOLDED AN LP. Was it bitterness? Meanness? Stupidity?

Anyway, I unfolded the record. Was I going to correspond with CBS about it? Whatever. So I flattened it under all my OTHER records. And there was a skip. But it was on “I before E except after C,” which is of course an act of aggressive production full of false rhythms and pop starts and retrogrades. SO I COULDN’T TELL WHEN IT WAS SKIPPING.

That record is still playing somewhere in 1983.

such a fun band. His hair was so wild and the music matched. Loved having the commercials between the songs, although they didn’t play them live. Not sss, but the Residents had a whole album of commercials (jingles) that were actually quite good too.
